Jermuk, Armenia

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he received information from Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev about the completion of the “military operation” on the border with Armenia. The Turkish leader told reporters about this after his trip to Uzbekistan, where he took part in the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), A Haber TV channel reports.

“In response to the provocations of Armenia, Azerbaijan declares that it has completed the operation it has begun. And now that the operation is over, there's no point in worrying about it now. According to the information I received from Mr. Ilham [Aliyev.— RBC], our Azerbaijani brothers are currently in a safe position,— Erdogan said.

He noted that it is important that Yerevan “give up its provocations” regarding Baku, fulfilled its obligations and focused on peace and cooperation as soon as possible.

“We wish that the normalization processes carried out in our region be successfully completed and that peace and stability in the region be ensured on an ongoing basis,” — concluded the head of state.

The SCO summit was held in Samarkand on 15 and 16 September. The members of the organization are Russia, India, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan and China. Belarus, Iran, Mongolia and Afghanistan have the status of observer states. Turkey is not a member of the organization, but Erdogan attended the summit at the personal invitation of President Vladimir Putin.

The day before the summit, Erdogan urged Armenia to “turn off the wrong path”; and expressed his support to Azerbaijan in the conflict. He accused Armenia of violating the agreement reached after the fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh in 2020. According to the Turkish President, Yerevan not only does not comply with the agreement, but also “shows aggression”, which will not pass without consequences for the Armenian side.

The aggravation of the conflict between Baku and Yerevan in question occurred on the night of September 12-13. Armenia accused Azerbaijan of shelling settlements on the southeastern border. Baku, in turn, stated that the Armenians had mined the supply lines of the Azerbaijani army and were also firing. Both sides also reported the dead: Armenia— about 135, Azerbaijan— about 79.

On the afternoon of September 13, the skirmishes did not stop, and then Armenia turned to the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) for help. By the evening of September 14, the parties managed to reach an agreement on a ceasefire. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in a speech in parliament that he was ready to make difficult decisions for the sake of peace, but he did not sign any documents. Nevertheless, hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Yerevan closer to the night. On the morning of September 15, Armenia reported a night without incident on the border with Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijani President Aliyev, at the same SCO summit, thanked Putin “for the prompt response to the aggravation, escalation in the zone of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border”, noting that neither side had any intentions of large-scale escalation. Later, at a press conference, the Russian president told reporters that “first of all, under the influence of Russia, this conflict was localized.”
